FLAD-Camões Institute Chair of Portuguese Culture in Utah
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at BYU is honored to host a prestigious academic chair sponsored by the Luso-American Foundation (FLAD) and Camões Institute. Generous funding from these respected Portuguese institutions supports research and teaching on a wide range of subjects related to the study of Portugal and Portuguese language and culture, including linguistics, literature and other arts, history, and post-colonial studies.
From 2021 to 2024, the FLAD-Camões Institute Chair of Portuguese Culture in Utah has provided financial support to over sixty students who have either studied abroad in Portugal or completed an international internship in Lisbon.
Future programming includes ongoing support for research activities, including the More than Muses project, theater performances of Gil Vicente, and conferences and presentations commemorating the 50th anniversary of the April 25 Carnation Revolution and the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Luiz Vaz de Camões.
