What effect will these changes have for students?

These changes will have no effect on graduation requirements. Students will simply need to take the updated course rather than the original. For example, if students were planning to take SPAN 414 (Introduction to Translation) in the Fall, they would now need to register for SPAN 360 (Introduction to Translation). The system is set up to recognize the new course titles/numbers as equivalent to the original
ones. No substitutions should be required, but if students are running into issues with courses not showing up on their progress report, they should contact Liberal Arts Advisement & Careers.

Students in the Portuguese BA and Spanish BA programs are required to take 6 credits of electives at the 400 or 500 level (Req. 6 for Spanish, Req. 7 for Portuguese). If students have taken or are planning to take a 400-level course that is now a 300-level course (e.g., SPAN/PORT 451 → SPAN/PORT 351) that course will still count as a 400-level course for the purpose of that requirement. If students have taken or are planning to take a 300-level course that is now a 400-level course (e.g., SPAN/PORT 346R → SPAN/PORT 447R), that course will count as a 400-level course for the purpose of the requirement.

The 400-/500-level credit requirement does not apply to students in Spanish/Portuguese Studies (2nd major), Spanish Translation, Spanish Teaching, or the Spanish/Portuguese minor.

Will these changes effect GE-approved courses? No, any courses that met a GE requirement prior to the change in title/number will continue to meet that GE requirement. For example, SPAN 330 (previously SPAN 339), will still fulfill the Letters requirement.

Will these changes affect requirements for students in the Spanish/Portuguese language certificate program? No, students will simply need to register for the updated course numbers.
