Focus on Form: Perceptions of Portuguese Immersion Teachers When Implementing the CAPA Model
Biography
I am a Brazilian educator with 15 years of experience teaching students at various grade levels. I graduated in Pedagogy from the Federal University of Paraná and began my teaching career in Brazil, where I also taught English as a Second Language in the evenings. In 2015, I moved to the United States to join the Portuguese Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program in Utah. For five years, I taught first grade, where I developed a holistic and culturally immersive approach to language teaching, and now I am in my fourth year as a middle school DLI teacher, a role that I absolutely love.
Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to present at several education and language conferences, sharing insights and strategies I've developed over the years. Balancing full-time work, family responsibilities, and my pursuit of an MA in Portuguese Pedagogy at BYU has been a challenge, but one that has driven me to grow both personally and professionally. I remain committed to professional development and strive to inspire my students to engage deeply with the Portuguese language and culture, fostering a classroom environment that values critical thinking and cultural awareness.

Advice to Current or Future Graduate Students
I wasted so much time doubting my abilities and postponing my master’s degree. Don’t doubt yourself. It was the most transformative decision of my professional life. Apply for the master’s program. Know that the Lord will guide you every step of the way and always be by your side.
What I like about BYU
I knew that the MA in Portuguese Pedagogy could help me learn concepts that would benefit my professional life, but it turned out to be so much more than I ever imagined. I feel incredibly fulfilled and, in a way, empowered by all the knowledge I have gained. I love the university environment and the adaptability I’ve experienced with the professional track. My master’s program has also brought me closer to my Savior. BYU has opened doors to incredible opportunities through the courses, classes, and conferences I’ve attended.
I have had amazing professors who possess immense knowledge and experience. They have generously shared what they knew while genuinely caring about me.
